Hello guys,
So I hope you are well and having a lovely weekend! I have just finished training at the gym with a friend and we had possibly the best most fun session ever! So many laughs (mainly at my failed attempts) and a seriously tough workout but without picking up a single weight or touching the cardio equipment….
New Focus
So I shall keep the story short but having started out as a cardio bunny then making the switch to weight training (after much persuasion)! I went from being an unhappy, rabbit food eating, ‘skinny-fat’ cardio queen to lean, strong, food loving gym bunny having a far more varied and balanced diet – eating a lot more without fear of gaining weight.
However now having trained with weights for several years, I feel I am losing focus and my love for training a little. For me lifting heavy and hitting PB’s isn’t something that motivates me – whilst at first I used to think it was I think I more followed and copied what everyone else was doing and i thought I should be doing. Whilst I still agree weight training still far outweighs cardio and I will still be including some weight training I wanted to experiment a little more -being able to do handstands, muscle ups and more gymnastic/callinsthetic training thats what I want to be able to do.
Weight Training for A Different Purpose
So whilst I mentioned I not overly fussed about hitting new PB’s I will be keeping my weight training but instead focused around strengthening my weaknesses so I able to perform the gymnastic/calisthenics movements.
Experimenting today with handstands and muscle ups helped us identify our weaknesses and areas to strength so for example I find my core on the left side weaker to hold me in the handstand and my arms are not strong enough to push myself up in the muscle up – these are some of the areas I can now use to focus my training around working towards my new goals.
There is No One Way to Train
Today really brought back my love for training and I had a really hard but fun workout actually spending 2 hours in the gym without even realising! Training does help you lose weight, gain muscle, tone up and look good but if its always just about this likely you will find the motivation isn’t always there and at some points will struggle to find that motivation especially on those days you’ve had a long day or its wet and cold out – have a training based focus and you will find that motivation – set SMART goals!
Maybe you ae motivated by lifting heavy and hitting new PB’s, maybe its to run 5k in under 30mins or maybe you fancy doing something a little different, taking up a new sport or doing some funky moves like me – whatever it is just make sure you are enjoying what you do work out what you want to do first and then take small steps to achieve just that. Create a health and fitness lifestyle you enjoy and you will achieve that killer bod you have always wanted and enjoy it!
I hope this has been a helpful little insight for you and as always please feel free to ask any questions or need any help with your goals or training ping me a message (sinead@scmfitness.co.uk). Would love to heat from you guys 🙂
Happy training and I hope you all have a cracking week!
Lots of love,
Sinead x
